Posted on 03.24.2025

We are seeking student workers to assist with qualitative analysis of community conversation transcripts. No prior research experience is required—training will be provided!

Contact: Marina Rakhilin, mrna@media.mit.edu

Overview

This position involves reviewing transcripts of recorded conversations and applying a structured set of codes to different parts of the text. These codes help categorize key themes and ideas, making the data easier to analyze.

Responsibilities

  • Complete your CITI Human Subjects Protection Training
  • Attend Training Sessions:
    • A 1-hour Zoom training on how to read transcripts and identify key ideas (a process called “highlighting”).
    • A 90-minute Zoom training on using a qualitative codebook, which provides definitions for different themes. You will practice tagging highlighted text with appropriate codes to ensure accuracy.
    • Weekly check-in calls with a supervisor to provide updates and review quality of work.
  • Analyze Transcript Data:
    • Review approximately 20 hours of transcripts, identifying and highlighting individual contributions within the conversations.
    • Assign relevant codes to each highlighted section based on the provided qualitative codebook.

Timeline

  • The bulk of this work should be completed by the end of May 2025.
  • Work can be done from home and asynchronous or in-person at the MIT Media Lab, however you prefer. Expect no more than 8 hours/work per week.

Qualifications

  • CITI trained (preferred, not required)
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow guidelines for categorizing text.
  • Strong reading comprehension skills.
  • Interest in qualitative research, mixed methods, or social sciences (preferred but not required).

This is a great opportunity for students interested in getting more involved in research, community engagement methods, or gaining experience with real-world data analysis.
